Forfar Marafun

Forfar Rotary Club has just completed its 5th Marafun and pictured is the winning team called Fuel the Lactic Fib. Don’t ask but the Fife runners teamMarafun winning team included Bryce Aitken, Paul Roarty, Steve Reid, Brian Cruickshank & Chris Russell (Captain). Congratulations to them on a sterling performance. So they think its all over, well for the competitors, entertainers and stall holders etc. it may be the case, but for the organizing committee there is still a lot to do.

Obviously at this stage it is not possible the give an indication of the sum raised and this will revealed at an appropriate time later in the year. This was a brilliant result given the difficult times and every team who entered should be justifiably of their efforts in both the running and the raising of sponsorship money. Thanks to all of you, without the runners we would not have an event.

Rotary President and Provost of AngusPresident David Stobbs introduced Provost of Angus Ruth Leslie-Melville who spoke of the importance of the Marafun in the Events Calendar for Forfar and Angus concluding by officially starting the race.

The Rotary Club of Forfar have so many people to thank for making this a very successful day and it would be impossible to individually thank everyone but once again a special thanks to our main sponsors Guild Homes. Thanks also to Strathmore Foods for the Purple Pinkie sponsorship and Forfar Inner Wheel for their help with this extra event.

Another extra feature this year was the International Market and this was judged by the public to be a welcome addition with a chance to browse the varied stalls and made the streets of Forfar part of the continent, even if it was only for a day.

The Shop Window Mystery Object Competition was well supported with the top three entries all being from the fairer sex. The Winner was---Julia Murrie, Finavon, the runners- up were Laura Wilson, Carseburn, and Zara McBean, Forfar. well done girls. A huge thank you to all the shops for their participation and sponsorship and to all the schools in the Kirriemuir and Forfar area for helping with the distribution of quiz forms.

All the photographs from the event will be available for purchase in due course and there will be a link to follow posted on the club website www.forfarrotary.org.uk. All photo’s ordered will further enhance the Marafun Fund as the club will receive a donation from each print sold.

Finally these emailed comments from two of the runners from the winning team. “Just wanted to thanks for the brilliant Marafun on Sunday. I realise it must be fantastically complicated to put on, but it is so well organised it beggars belief.

The lap counters deserve special praise for their diligence and accuracy in managing to keep track of us lot. The bands were great too, keeping the atmosphere exciting and noisy. And the marshalls for keeping the streets clear. I could go on. But main thanks to the Rotary Club for actually getting it all done and making it happen. My team really enjoyed it and again can't wait for the next one.”

“ Just wondering if we did actually set a new race record on Sunday? if not, what time do we have to beat next time? ”

So, the challenge is already on for 2012.

More information will be released to the press as soon as it becomes available.

Guild Homes is Forfar Rotary’s Marafun Front Runner

Mark GuildLocal businessman Mark Guild of Guild Homes has pledged his support to this years Forfar Marafun. Faced with the daunting task of finding sponsorship in these difficult financial times Forfar Rotary were ecstatic to find Mark more than willing to be the main sponsor. Keeping their house in order has proved easier than thought, due to this generous from Guild Homes.

Having been involved with sponsoring the Marafun since its inception Mark himself has found running to be an important part of his life and finds this form of exercise, a stress relieving form of keeping fit. Being a busy man he has now found that he makes time for a regular run stating you don’t need lots of gear, just motivation. So Marafun has put something into Marks life just as Marafun with its fund raising has helped many others such as Cancer research etc.

Mark like many local business men feels he wants to put something back in the community, stating it is not all about taking but sharing, providing much needed employment that benefits local trades etc. and with Guild Homes he feels he can do just that.

The launch of Marafun 2010 is programmed for the 24th of Feb and more details will be announced regarding some new innovations to make the event as memorable as it has been in its popularity in the past. Being a bi-annual event it has now become an established part of Forfar Rotary’s Programme as well as an event that puts Forfar on the map.

JOHNSTON CARMICHAEL’S FORFAR TEAM RAISES £1,000 FOR CHARITY

Kind-hearted staff from the Forfar office of chartered accountancy firm Johnston Carmichael have raised £1,000 for charity, after organising a host of fundraising activities over the past 12 months.

The charity drive has seen Johnston Carmichael’s Forfar team raise the cash for From left to right, Vicky Calder, Lawrie MacDougall (Tayside NHS), Robin Dandie, Lynne Mustard, Roddy Anderson, Gill Brady (Tayside NHS) and Louise Peters.the office’s chosen cause for the year – the Scottish Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, which provides treatment, assessment and review services for people with the disease.

Throughout the year, Johnston Carmichael’s Forfar-based staff organised an array of activities as they attempted to raise as much funds as possible for the charity.

These included two of the firm’s more adventurous employees climbing Ben Nevis, dress down days, a Virgin Vie night and raffles.

The fundraising drive undertaken by the Forfar office was part of a year-long, firm-wide initiative by Johnston Carmichael to raise cash for a number of good causes, with each of its 10 regional offices raising funds for their chosen local charity.

As a result of the firm’s mammoth fundraising campaign, it has raised a hugely impressive £44,282 for a range of organisations during the past 12 months, bringing the grand total raised for charity by Johnston Carmichael employees, over the last six years, to around £172,000.

Roddy Anderson, Partner in charge of Johnston Carmichael’s Forfar office, commented: “We’ve had a fantastic time raising cash for the Scottish Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, with our staff undertaking a range of fun and unique activities, which everyone hugely enjoyed participating in.

“Every member of our Forfar team contributed to the campaign, by wholeheartedly getting involved to raise as much cash as possible, and we’re delighted to have now raised £1,000 for such an exceptional and worthwhile cause.”

Lawrie MacDougall, Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Scottish Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service, added: “On behalf of all of our patients, we are extremely grateful for this generous contribution. Monies rasied locally are held within an account in the university and are used to directly benefit our local patients.

“Cysytic Fibrosis is the most common genetically inherited disease with one person in 25 carrying the cf gene - if anyone is interested in finding out more about the disease, then please contact any member of our team at Ninewells Hospital.”

As well as Forfar, Johnston Carmichael has offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fraserburgh, Elgin, Glasgow, Huntly, Inverness, Inverurie and Perth, and currently employs more than 450 people throughout the country.
