As one of Scotland’s leading design practices, we work with clients to create award winning building solutions which satisfy their current and future requirements.

Through design excellence balanced with commercial awareness, professionalism and a careful attention to detail, our aim is to produce carefully composed, innovative and dynamic aesthetically pleasing buildings.

We endeavour to respond to the site, its context and to carefully consider both environmental and conservation issues.

Since our Founding Partner, Fred Stephen, started in business in 1977, James F Stephen Architects has grown to be one of the largest Architectural practices in Scotland.

Our practice has expanded in size primarily as a result of the quality of the work produced and the acclaim that this has received.

We are a dynamic forward thinking Scottish Architectural Practice with experience of creating award-winning buildings in a diverse range of building types.

We work with clients to create dynamic projects that seek to exceed expectations whilst always ensuring that brief and budgetary requirements are adhered to.

As well as offering our “core” architectural services, we can also offer interior design, landscape design, conservation and adjudication services from within our enthusiastic and diverse in-house team.

Over our 34 years in Practice we have carried out architectural, interior design and landscape design commissions over the length and breadth of Scotland.  We have also carried out commissions in England, Northern Ireland, France, Salamanca in Spain, Rome, Romania and Dubai.  In 2011 we completed phase one of a boutique hotel just outside Lucca in Italy.

We have also been invited to collaborate on projects and competitions with word renowned architects such as Moriyama + Teshima from Toronto, Snohetta from Oslo and Morphosis from Los Angeles.  Perhaps most notably we collaborated with Frank Gehry also from Los Angeles on the Maggie’s Cancer Respite Centre in Dundee.  In 2004 this small building won the Royal Fine Art Commission/BSkyB Building of the Year Award in competition against famous landmark buildings such as the “Gherkin” situated in London’s financial district.
